“Arulmigu Murugan Temple is a green field Temple with no prior background or relocation history.
The idea to construct a Hindu Temple in the Jurong area was first mooted in the 1960’s. However, due to inadequate funding the idea had to be shelfed till the Mid 90’s during which a group of committed members got together to receive the plan. A Building Committee consisting of a Fundraising Committee and Ladies Committee consisting of a Fundraising public and raise funds.
In 1993 the Temple successfully tendered and secured the Temple land for 30- Year period at about S$520,000. A temporary Temple was built so as to get the Temple operational while at the same time continuing to raise funds for the Temple building. The construction of the 2-storey annex building started in 1998 and was completed within 2 years at a cost of S$800,000. Many professionals, including our Temple’s major donor Mr. Singam, provided free services which enabled us to save S$400,000 on professional fees.
With the relentless efforts of our Ladies Committee and the Fundraising Committee the Management was able to solicit S$1.6 million to the fund came from 598 families who contributed to the building fund. In addition, the Temple Ladies Committee through their various fundraising efforts brought in about S$900,000 dollars. The second phase of Temple construction started in 2001 and was fully completed by early 2004. The Maha Kumbabishegam (Consecration Ceremony) of our Arulmigu Murugan Temple was successfully held on 28 November 2004. About 12,000 devotes attended and witnessed the ceremony. The relentless support of the Public and Temple well-wishers helped realise this dream of the Hindu society to have its first Temple in Jurong Area.
The much awaited second Maha Kumbabishegam was held on 27 October 2023 with much pomp and the entire ceremony was conducted following the highest level of agamas and religious rituals of the highest order. Led by our Chief Priest, Karthikeyan from Nagapatinam, over 35 priests from local temples and India conducted the ceremony.
At 8.35 am Maha Kumbabishegam for all Sanctum Deities took place. Despite being a week day more then 10 thousand devotees participated in the ceremony. Special arrangements were made for the senior citizens to witness the ceremony. They followed the proceedings of the ceremony through life telecast on a big screen at the tentage area located in Yuhuua Village.
Priority lunch serving was carried out for all Senior Citizens while watching the live streaming. With the support of the volunteer’s lunch was prepared and served for 10,000 people at the tentage area. A total of 540 volunteers for together to ensure the event was carried out as planned. The cost for the Maha Kumbabishegam was fully covered by our Donors and well-wishers for whom we are very grateful. The encouragement and support from our Temple Devotees was a major contributing factor for the successful and well executed Maha Kumbabishegam.
The Kumbabishegam was followed 48 days of Mandalabishegam poojas conducted from 28 October 2023 to 14 December 2023. The Silver Chariot procession was held on 16 December 2023.
As part of our social obligation to our society the Temple has embarked on various support programmes for the Community. One of the main programmes is the Monthly dry ration distribution for the Needy families in Singapore. The Programmes has over the year expanded nationwide. A group of very kind hearted volunteers guided be the Temple Management manages the physical distribution of rations to about 100 families on monthly basis. The Temple has successfully carried out this programme for over 25 years and has increased the allocation to S$70 per family due to high inflation. The Temple allocated S$80,000 annually for this program and has over the past 25 years spent about S$1.8 million on this very meaningful effort.
In addition, the Temple has also been making donations to various organisations. A sum of S$50,000 was donated to SINDA. The Temple also sponsored a Kidney dialysis machine costing S$50,000 to the dialysis centre set up in the Yuhua constituency by the Kidney Dialysis Foundation for the benefit of the residents in Jurong area.
We have successfully negotiated and fully paid up the Temple land lease extension for another 30 years starting Y2024. The Amount of approximately S$2.2M was paid out from the Temple sinking fund. The Temple Management is committed to ensure that our Vision and Mission remains relevant to the expectation of the Temple devotees and the Hindu Society. We will ensure that the expectations are well fulfilled and sustained.
